Giving back to the community is essential, and making it a part of your lifestyle has a positive impact on your life.
As you may not find many people who willingly give back to the community, you will find it in NPHC organizations.
NPHC, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, consists of nine historically African American international Greek letter sororities and fraternities. Also known as the Divine Nine, NPHC is composed of four sororities and five fraternities.
The sororities include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
The other five organizations are the fraternities which include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Each of these organizations were created to uplift the African American community with common ideas and principles.
By serving the community as well, they are helping make the world a better place, even if it is something small.
They serve by participating and volunteering in their own international programs that focus on impacting the community, as well as work together in community service events in Rock Hill.
Some of the events include Rolling in Rock Hill, which consists of painting houses and Adopt-a-Highway, which is a roadside clean-up.
“The target program I enjoy the most within AKA is Global Impact because we are able to go above and beyond our calling to the Rock Hill community,” Angelica Burgess, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. said. “But as a whole, NPHC is able to leave a mark that leaves a lasting impression in the eyes of those that don’t know what our Greek orgs stands for.”
At Winthrop, NPHC is responsible for NPHC Unwritten Rules, a panel discussion that informs prospective students on Greek life. They also coordinate the annual Homecoming Step Show.
NPHC plays an important role in school, but will always impact someone’s life as they are uplifting and serving them by giving back and lending a helping hand in any way possible.
