An organization addressing sexual abuse and misconduct

Sisterhood of the Travelling Panties is an organization on campus that allows Winthrop women who have experienced any sexual trauma to reach out and join a group of students dedicated to advocacy and female empowerment.

Summer Phillips, a junior entrepreneurship major, is one of the co-founders. She said that the club is hoping to be a safe place for women who have experienced any trauma from sexual assault.

“We also don’t share stories because we are not identified by what happened to us,” Phillips said.

The club is dedicated to empowering and uplifting these women through good and bad times. Phillips said she feels like this was the perfect place for her to turn after her experience.

“I think that every campus needs a club like this because I think that sexual abuse is way more common than we think or would like to think. A group like this makes me feel like my feelings are valid and that I’m allowed to have normal human emotions. It proves that you’re not alone,” Phillips said.

Phillips said that she believes it is important for people to understand that these women aren’t victims, they’re survivors, and their experiences and feelings cannot be invalidated by anyone.

“It’s not an easy thing to go through by any means, and the women who have experienced this are extremely strong, regardless of what people want to say or how they feel. Creating a group of women who are ready to speak out has been one of the most incredible things,” Phillips said.

Phillips said that the club is looking forward to participating in future events of education and awareness of this issue.

“We try to do things that either have a female speaker, promote women’s empowerment or address sexual abuse. The next cultural event we have is ‘Time’s Up’ on March 28, at 7 P.M. in Richardson Ballroom where we will have a table for people to stop and talk with us about the organization,” Phillips said.

The sisterhood meets every Tuesday night from 6:15- 7:15 in Crawford 210, and can also be reached via their Instagram @wutravelingpanties or email at phillipss32@winthrop.edu
